One Last Post

Petit Four Press began as a month-long experiment for me in blogging and keeping my Japanese up, and when I hit the end of that first month your support and my schedule allowed me to continue it as a trial for another couple of months. Thank you all for your emails and support during that time.

Unfortunately, my schedule at my new job has more or less killed most of my free time, and along with it my chance to really keep this blog up and do it well, so this will be my last post here. I wish you all lots of frills and fun and will continue to see you around on LJ and Lolita-related events in NYC.

In many Japanese schools, the year ends in March and begins again in April, which could be why Baby is rolling out their "School Cardigans" now. You can check out the Baby version or their two Alice and the Pirates cardigans on their shopping page.

They're also having a "Maiden's Secret Poisoned Apple" Fair, where if you spend more than 10,000 yen in-store starting the 20th of this month, or the 23rd for online orders, you can get a free hair barrette: you choose one or the other. Personally, I think this is the ugliest novelty I've seen in a while, but to each their own!

This week Petit Four sits down to talk with Nandi, a popular female photographer based in Canterbury, UK.

Her influences include a number of things, mainly colour, alternative fashion and culture, and Japanese fashion. Nandi enjoys photographing alternative styles of Gothic & Lolita and especially likes mixing punk with Sweet Lolita.

How did you become interested in Lolita fashion, and what was your very first Lolita outfit?
I became interested in Lolita fashion through manga: original, I know. I loved CLAMP's artwork and just researched more into stuff like Chobits, which then lead me on to Lolita. This was about 4-5 years ago now.

My first Lolita outfit? An awful off-brand combo from Camden in London.

You photographed singer and Lolita model Kana back in 2008. What was it like working with her?
Great! She's really cute as well as a princess. She was easy to direct and fun to work with, at times it was hard to get things done as she was so busy - but I did get to spend a full day with her, even go to her hotel room! Not as glamerous as you may think, ha ha.

You mention alternative fashion as one of your big influences: What styles or designers do you like and why?
I love Vivienne Westwood. She's been an inspiration of mine for years. I love any fashion that catches my eye, Japanese street fashion, candy rave, punk... If I see a person who has dressed in a style really well, I will stop and take it in. I think fashion is a beautiful thing, it's great to see those who really put the effort in! This is why I never stick to photographing one style.

What is the most important thing for you to capture in your photographs?
Colour, depth and angles. Recently I have gotten into showing more emotion and facial expressions. When it comes to photographing Lolita I like to make sure it has shape - the bell of the dress and the fluffyness of the socks...anything to give the image something aesthetically nice to look at.

Which is your favorite Lolita shoot of your own, and which is your favorite out of others’ work?
My favourite is possibly Wonderland with Floz. It had been my most successful so far and has boosted my confidence massively as it was published in Bizarre magazine. As for my favourite from others? Probably every shoot that cake_injection does, I am in awe!

Do you have any tips for amateurs with point-and-click cameras who want to take better fashion photos?
Just try to keep it simple. Rules of thirds is something that can be done with any camera and can look great. I recomend looking it up. Also flash isn't always the answer - if the light is good enough try and avoid using direct flash as it is unflattering for the model and makes them look flat. Also, play with angles! You'd be surprised by how changing the angle can instantly change an image.

How about advice for those that want to become a pro like you?
I recomend saving up for a DSLR and look into working with semi-pro models on a TFP basis. From this you can slowly build your portfolio up and then start accepting paid shoots. I also recommend a good photographic class if you're serious about knowing your gear. It's a good feeling when you produce images you know you have worked hard to achieve.

Baby the Stars Shine Bright is teaming up with Vantan Design to offer a special "short course seminar" for 36,000 yen, where you get to, over a total of three days, choose what item you'd like to make out of a skirt, bonnet, or headdress, and actually make and produce your "original Baby" item using their lace, pattern paper, etc. and your own fabric you bring in.

The trick is that they updated today, the 6th, and the first day of the seminar is the 7th. Baby is a cruel, cruel mistress.

New York's FIT Exhibit - Gothic: Dark Glamour

Those of you in the New York area may have already heard of the Fashion Institute of Technology's Gothic: Dark Glamour exhibit, but I wanted to give my own review.

In short, I highly recommend it to Lolitas who may be curious about their own fashion's cousin and chronological forebear, Goth, and are looking for a fun and free thing to do this weekend, the exhibit's final days. (Lolita itself, specifically the misnomered "Elegant Gothic Lolita", appears as a footnote in the exhibit, but is definitely not the central focus.) There are a ton of darkly beautiful dresses, a neat set-up for the different areas of the exhibit, and a chance to see h. Naoto displayed in FIT alongside designers like Balenciaga and Lagerfeld. ;)

Last night, through the kind gift of a family friend, I had the pleasure of being part of a guided tour, led by the wonderful Dr. Valerie Steele, curator of not only the exhibit but the entire FIT museum.

As a Goth since the mid-1990's, I was curious to see how an "outsider" would approach a subculture and fashion I have loved and participated in for so long, and Dr. Steele led us on an educated, objective look at the evolution of the idea of "Gothic" from the first classic novels written hundreds of years ago all the way through the UK's famous Batcave nightclub, working in fashion from the original Victorian cult of mourning through the runway looks of high-end designers like Galliano and Gaultier to dresses from Lip Service and shoes from Fluevog. Themes I had always seen and known to be "Goth" from my own experiences were explained and displayed in scholarly terms: the Haunted House, the Laboratory, the Ruined Castle, all hearkening back to the first novels, paintings and works that explored the themes of terror, decay and decadence.

I really liked a particular quote of Dr. Steele, as she discussed the Dandy style (of hundreds of years ago, not just the Lolita version): there were dark Dandies, fastidious ones, and "sweet" ones, ones that bordered on looking too effeminate for the society of the day. But what they all had in common, she said, was that "to be seen was to be". The look you created for yourself made you what you were, so why not be beautiful?

This also led into a discussion of how Goth is a completely artificial fashion. Most fashions and styles try to fool the eye or pretend that they're natural beauty, but Goth is purposefully artificial. It's a world created by the wearer, a conscious decision to project an image. I thought that idea of boldly and beautifully creating perfection in the eyes of the wearer was a sentiment many Lolitas would understand. :)

So if you have a minute online or time in the city this weekend, check Gothic: Dark Glamour out. It's a fun and free experience and chance to get an unbiased, objective look at the dark and lovely world of Goth.

Organizers for the decadent Dances of Vice events will hold a formal spring ball on March 21st in New York City called "Le Sacre du Printemps". Lolita designers Blasphemina's Closet and Megan Maude will be there, among others, to show their lines.

Much like Halloween for Goths, if you're in a country that celebrates Valentine's Day it can be a great chance for Lolitas, particularly the Sweet variety, to pick up some fun home decor and decorating touches. A few tips for adding a little love to your home this week:

1. Don't wait until the 15th: Start looking around now. Lots of stores are currently discounting their Valentine's merchandise to make room for Easter.

2. Look for more subtle things. "Red plus hearts" usually equals Valentine's Day, but if you look around, you can find more general items that can work year-round. One example is this pink bon-bon handtowel from Target, just over $3.00.

3. Don't think Sweet is your only option: if you look around online, you can find things like this Classic-friendly lavender heart wreath, $9.99, for your wall or door.

Algonquins New Shinjuku Store and Invite Give-Away

Punky brand Algonquins, which officially left the Marui group of department stores back in January, has announced its new Shinjuku location, which will be across the street from Marui City 1 and 2.

It'll open officially on February 20th at 11am, and there will be a pre-opening the day before, the 19th, from 5pm to 9pm. If you're in town and would like to go, you'll need a ticket to get in. I recently had a chance to interview Lolita designer and artist Megan Amo, better known as Megwa online, about her designs, work and original prints!

As a designer, artist and seamstress, you've sold your work at Pacific Media Expo (PMX), shown it on the runway at Anime L.A., and sell your pieces online. How did you get into Lolita and making Lolita clothing?

Honestly, I can't even remember how I got into Lolita! I think my general interest in Japanese culture somehow led me to to it. As for making Lolita clothing, I have to say that I was initially quite intimidated by the style. I learned a lot through the EGL community and by talking with different vendors at anime conventions. I also got a lot of encouragement from Rene Twaite of The White Peacock, who just opened the first Lolita fashion physical store location in the U.S. last September - she told me not to be intimidated and just do everything with my whole heart.

Do you have any funny or unusual stories to share from your first sewing days or conventions?

Not everyone may know this, but two of my models from the Anime L.A. fashion show were actually male. I was very fortunate to have found them, because they carried the looks perfectly. No one really realized it until they spoke! When someone asked for a photo and heard the deep voice in response, he nervously said, "Uhh...I forgot something...I'll be right back...." After that, we never did see him again.

Who are your favorite designers, Lolita or otherwise?

I really like the designs of Alice and the Pirates and h.NAOTO.

You're one of the few Western Lolita designers out there to make your own prints. Where did you learn to do this and what got you started?

I don't know that I necessarily "learned" it, I just took my artwork to a professional screen printer to do it for me. (laughs) In the beginning, I simply decided that I wanted to make something completely my own, so I went out and had my own fabric printed. Then, my sister who is a lawyer, insisted that she help me get my prints legally protected because they came out so well. In time, my desire to be unique grew into my goal to make garments that would be comparable to brand clothing.

Which is your favorite print out of the ones you've made?

Definitely Clockwork Enchantment, because it's completely different from anything that has been done before.

What inspires you as an artist or designer?

I find inspiration in many things...I can't say anything in particular inspires me because sometimes I'll be minding my own business and then "BAM!" it hits me.

What advice would you give to any beginning Lolita seamstress?

Sewing is a gradual learning process, so don't feel bad if your first attempts aren't up to your expectations. Also, don't be afraid to try new techniques! If you ever make a mistake, then you can learn from it for the next time.

Marui Stores Remodel, Lolita Shops Relocate

Shinjuku shopping mall and Lolita mecca MaruiYoung/MaruiOne is closing down today, as well as other Shinjuku Marui locations, and will reopen February 27, while MaruiCity-2 will reopen on February 20. Update: Please note Marui City 2 has been renamed "Marui One" for its new opening, with the old, different Marui One now called Marui Curren.

A mass exodus will take place, putting nearly all the brands you know and love at the MaruiCity-2 location (to be called Marui One) in time for its February 20th opening.

Algonquins will be leaving the Marui stores for good, while Emily Temple Cute and Jane Marple will remain open during the remodeling through temporary stores at MaruiCity-1.

Lots of meet-ups go on every month around the world, giving Lolitas a chance to meet new friends and old in fun get-togethers with fellow lovers of the fashion. Many girls talk about how they never know about meet-ups happening in their area until it's too late, and organizers sometimes wonder how to get the news of their meet-ups to more people.

So I thought I'd try starting a new feature here at Petit Four Press, a meet-up calendar of sorts. It'll be a monthly list of upcoming get-togethers (which I will be happy to post updates to throughout the month as information is sent in), and the calendar post will be easy to find, linked from the side bar of this blog's front page. Like the blog itself, this will be an experiment of sorts, so we'll see how it goes!

This week I had the chance to interview Irene about the calendar, Lolita, and her photography. Read on for Halloween scares, a call for collaborators, and more!

Your beautiful calendar features all Western Lolitas, and the international community response to it has been overwhelmingly positive. Did that response surprise you?

Usually, photoshoots have a very good reception among the international community, but I’ve been very surprised with all the support people have given to my calendar: I didn’t expect it at all. It’s the best reward when people like what you do.

How did you get into photography?

I think it was almost four years ago, around the same time I heard of Lolita. I’ve been into art since I was very little, and back then I was going through a time of changes and self-discovery, so for me, photography was finding a new way to express myself and my thoughts. I wanted to create beauty.

How long have you been into Lolita?

As I said, almost four years: I got into it when I was 15. Time goes by fast, no doubt about it!

What was the first photo you took that you were really proud of?

One of the very first pictures I took: My best friend was in it. But if I had to mention a more recent one, I think it’d be "Snow White," which is also featured as the November photo in my calendar.

This calendar came from a class project, you've said. Will you do more Lolita prints or calendars in the future?

I have no doubts about it! Lolita is undeniably tied to my life, and in a way, it influences my view of beauty. I’m very looking forward to working with more Lolitas in the future, so if anyone’s interested in collaborating with me, don’t hesitate to contact me!

Do you have any favorite photos or funny stories about any of the shoots that went into the calendar?

Oh yes! For the Halloween shoot we were inside the building I live in, and my friend Paola had to lie down on the stairs of the entrance hall. Apart from lights switching off all the time (that drove me crazy and had me running all over the place), every now and then a neighbour would come in and freak out, and I had to explain I was there taking pictures. I suppose a pink-haired girl playing dead, surrounded by sweets, is not something you see everyday. *laughs*

Do you have any advice for people who'd like to go to school for photography?

I just started school myself, so there’s little I can say about it yet. But for becoming a better photographer I know that working hard, researching, reading, trying and practicing a lot is the best advice I can give, I think.

Welcome to Petit Four Press, a new blog that aims to be your one-stop shop for the latest Lolita fashion info!

If you don't know what Lolita is, the short version is something along the lines of "a distinctive and feminine Japanese street fashion that prizes quality and modesty."

For those of you who do know what it is (and who this blog is for), here's what this experiment is all about: For a month or so, I'm going to attempt to update daily or near daily with at least one current sale, update, or piece of news for a Japanese or Western brand, as well as the occasional "soft feature", like interviews, profiles, and so on. I'd like Petit Four to be a helpful resource for international Lolitas looking for bargains, news and info all in one place, provided by a Lolita for Lolitas. :)

Hopefully this blog will provide a unique service to the community, as with other Lolita blogs you tend to have more of a lifestyle bent, whereas you will hear and see very little of me and my life here (nothing wrong with lifestyle blogs, of course, but that's not going to be my focus). Other Lolita resources, like magazines and emagazines, aren't updated as frequently, and the popular EGL community on LiveJournal isn't as filtered for news-only items.

Why am I doing this? I like sharing information and helping people out, and I need practice retaining the Japanese I've learned but no longer use. This may end up being way too much work, but I love a challenge and you never know until you try. :)
